Organizations: Venture Crew helps Foster Freeze opening

The Boy Scout Venture Crew will assist at the grand-opening celebration for the new owners of the Foster Freeze at 201 S. Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank. The event will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday and will feature a car rally and show displaying new Camaros and Mustangs and muscle cars and hotrods from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. A People’s Choice trophy will be presented at 4 p.m. The public can vote for their favorite throughout the event.

The event is part of an effort to establish an ongoing first-Sunday-of every-month car rally that is free to the public, said Jim Etter, assistant adviser for the Venture Crew. The crew adviser is Jenny Dehl.

Plans are to have a movie night one month, a karaoke night the next month and a poker run after that, Etter said. Each event will be staged around old cars.

Etter owns a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible, valued at more than $200,000. It was refurbished by famed car designer Chip Foose on the TV show “Overhaulin.” Etter bought the used car from Community Chevrolet in 1960. He is the second owner of the car. Etter’s son Daniel has a 1969 Camaro they reconditioned together.

“The car rally is a way to keep the interest of classic cars alive with young kids,” Etter said. “Classic cars are an important part of history and should be preserved. Throwing them away is like demolishing a historical building in the city.”

Sunday’s Car Rally will include music of the 1950s and ‘60s. And at 2 p.m. Mayor Anja Reinke will cut the ribbon. Then she and Councilman David Gordon and Chairman of the Police Commission Bob Frutos will ride a 1915 Model T across the path where the ribbon is cut.

Miss Foster Freeze Perla Buenrostro, adult junior leader of the crew, will be ceremonial host. She will greet the public and present the 2-foot trophy to the People’s Choice winner at 4 p.m.

The crew meets on the first and third Friday of the month at the Magnolia Park United Methodist Church, 2828 W. Magnolia Blvd.

The crew takes a camping trip at least once a month, and this year the group will attend two weeklong summer camps.

They work on projects throughout the year that help the community, like Family Promise and the beach cleanup day in Santa Monica.

Once a month the members find someone to help in the community. Recently they held a birthday party for a 15-year-old boy from a low-income family who hadn’t had a birthday party since he was 5, Etter said.

“We threw a birthday party for him and 15 of his friends,” Etter said. “We cooked hotdogs and had a birthday cake.”
