DVD review: ’21 Jump Street’ is ‘good dumb’

As I remarked in my review of the theatrical release of “21 Jump Street”, this feature revival/spoof of the ‘80s TV show is better than it has any right to be. It may be dumb, but it’s good dumb, mixing very broad shtick with clever sequences that turn around the conventions of the buddy-cop/action/blow-it-all-up genre. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are both hilarious and at times surprisingly touching.

Visually, the Blu-ray does what it should — that is, recreates the film’s look without any apparent tinkering. The extras start with a hang-loose commentary track, with Hill, Tatum and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller goofing around and saying whatever comes to their heads. There are 20 deleted scenes, totaling roughly half an hour; a five-minute reel of flubs; a similar two-minute compilation of goofs from supporting player Ice Cube; and about half an hour comprising five behind-the-scenes promo shorts.

This is one of those releases where if you’re a fan who cares about extras, getting the Blu-ray is a no-brainer. The DVD version only gives you the commentary, four of the deleted scenes, and one of the shorts. Among the missing material is a brief look at Johnny Depp’s brief shoot.
