Closures on the northbound and southbound Golden State (5) Freeway are scheduled for the Burbank area early this week, according to the California Department of Transportation.

A full closure of the northbound lanes and all ramps between Lankershim Boulevard and Paxton Street is scheduled to begin just before midnight Monday and last until 5 a.m. Tuesday to protect workers and motorists during a signage installation and median barrier work.

The work is part of the Caltrans project constructing a carpool lane on the 5 Freeway between the Ronald Reagan (118) and Hollywood (170) freeways, a new northbound connector between the 5 Freeway and State Route 170, and a new carpool lane connector between the 5 Freeway and State Route 170.

Additionally, up to two lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway will be closed between Hollywood Way and Buena Vista Street from 9 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday. The closure may be repeated for the same hours Tuesday into Wednesday.

Construction activities for the week include drilling operations and placement of one-way arrows on the Leland Way Channel Cap, retaining work on the southbound Buena Vista off-ramp, signage work on the southbound Burbank Boulevard off-ramp, and utility work near the closed Scott Road off-ramp. The work is part of the Empire Project, a series of freeway improvements between Magnolia Boulevard and Buena Vista Street.

CalTrans said no freeway construction work or closures are planned on Thursday, which is Christmas Day, or Friday.
