Graduates of Burbank’s first Catholic high school accepted their diplomas during a ceremony held Saturday at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.

A total of 37 students wore blue-and-white gowns as they graduated from Bellarmine-Jefferson High School.

The class of 2016 earned 55 university scholarships, won 17 private, corporate or foundation scholarships and received 54 additional awards or certificates recognizing their academic achievements.

Aside from those accomplishments, Bell-Jeff Principal Michael Stumpf said the class is made up of students who make positive contributions.

“They’re not an outspoken group. They’re more led by their actions,” he said, when reached by phone on Tuesday. “There is more of a quiet leadership ... There’s not a lot of loud voices. They’re more doers.”

With the graduating class made up of fewer than 40 students and the entire student body consisting of about 200 students, Stumpf said students and teachers know each other well.

“We talk about being a family here,” he said.

In many cases, after students graduate from Bell-Jeff, they return to inform their teachers what they’ve been doing, he added.

During Saturday’s ceremony, he told the graduates that he looks forward to hearing about what they go on to accomplish.

“We’re excited for them,” he said. “We know they’re going on to do great things, and we want to see what they’re going to do.”
