Burbank students walked or rode their bicycles to school Wednesday morning in celebration of Walk and Bike to School Day.
Teachers within the Burbank Unified School District notified parents in advance through fliers, encouraging families to partake in the citywide event that raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling.
At Edison Elementary, Diana Abasta, president of the Burbank Teachers’ Assn., gave away blue BTA pencils in celebration of the event. Shirts commemorating the day were also handed out to students at school sites.
Abasta said she hopes the event encouraged parents to allow their children to walk or bike to school as a viable alternative to being driven.
