Sample ballots, pamphlets cause confusion

The Burbank City Clerk’s office mailed ballots and sample pamphlets this week for the city’s upcoming primary election.
The ballots, mailed on Wednesday, feature candidates for Burbank City Council and the Burbank Unified school board. But some registered voters have been confused by a sample ballot and information pamphlet for the Los Angeles County Community College District primary elections.
“Voters are urged to make certain the proper ballot is returned to the proper location,” the City Clerk’s office said in a statement on Wednesday. “Please read your ballots carefully and submit the appropriate one to the City Clerk’s office.”
Burbank City Clerk Zizette Mullins said she started receiving inquiries from voters on Tuesday after they had received the college district’s sample ballots, which were mailed by the Los Angeles City Clerk’s office and began arriving in Burbank earlier this week.
Unlike Burbank’s vote-by-mail municipal elections, the college district’s election takes place March 3 and requires that voters cast their ballots at their local polling places.
However, the sample ballot includes an application for a vote-by-mail provisional ballot, which must be received by L.A.’s City Clerk no later than Feb. 24, the same day as Burbank’s primary election day.
The Burbank ballots must be returned by mail prior to Feb. 19 and can be turned in at drop-off centers on Feb. 21 or 24.
