Bell-Jeff wins regular-season finale, 22-14
Andrew Kushner
WOODLAND HILLS -- Bellarmine-Jefferson High football coach Rolando
Aguirre had one goal coming into this season.
To get his Guards in gear and reach the playoffs.
In this weekends season finale against St.Genevieve High, Aguirre
fulfilled his goal as his Guards beat the Valiants 22-14, in a Santa Fe
league game at Pierce College.
The victory earned Bell-Jeff (4-6, 2-1) an automatic berth into the
CIF Southern Section Division XII playoffs. The only bad thing is it will
have to face Mojave High, a team that lost one game during the regular
season.
“This was really a great way for us to end the season,” said Aguirre.
“We dominated St.Gen’s all game and everybody played well.”
Aguirre was also pleased that his team made the post-season but he
knows it will be tough.
“I’ve seen Mojave on film and they’re loaded. But if we can slow them
down and control the clock, anything can happen.”
Neither team scored in the opening quarter but in the second, that
changed.
At the 9:11 mark of the second quarter, Carlos Trujillo took the ball
in from 10 yards out, giving the Guards an 8-0 lead.
But the Valiants (1-9, 0-3) answered with 3:41 remaining in the half,
when running back Carlos Reyes took one in from four yards out, tying the
score at 8.
The game stayed tied until the 8:47 mark of the third quarter when
Bell-Jeff quarterback Rene Garcia took the draw and went eight yards into
the endzone to give the Guards a 14-8 lead.
However St.Genevieve wouldn’t quit and with 10:22 remaining in the
fourth quarter, quarterback Carl Pisano found an open Rudy Ranguelo for a
34 yard touchdown to tie the score at 14.
But the Guards weren’t finished and with 6:04 remaining in the game,
fullback Devid Centrone took the handoff and went 16 yards into the
endzone for the game winning touchdown.
Leading the Guards was Trujillo who rushed for 91 yards and one
touchdown in 16 carries.
Centrone also had a solid game rushing for 78 yards and one touchdown
in 15 carries.
The bright spot for St.Genevieve was Reyes who finished with 112 yards
and one touchdown in 12 carries.
