* Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Chester Algoe, the son of Artcharat

Karoonyanond of Glendale, is one of more than 370,000 active duty sailors

celebrating the Navy’s 224th birthday. He also recently participated in a

training exercise while forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan aboard the

destroyer USS Cushing. He joined the Navy in February 1995.

*Marine Pfc. James E. VanMeter, the son of Joseph J. and Madelyn A.

VanMeter of Glendale, recently completed the Motor Vehicle Operator

Course at Marine Corps Detachment, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

He is a 1997 graduate of Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta

and joined the Marine Corps in 1999.

* Marine Pfc. Jong W. Chu, the son of Young Man and Song Mae Chu of

Glendale, is one of more than 170,000 active duty Marines celebrating the

Marine Corp’s 224th birthday.

He is a 1998 graduate of Herbert Hoover High School and joined the

Marine Corps in August 1998.

*Air Force AirmanJames D. Johnson, the son of Debra A. Johnson of

Montrose and grandson of Jim and Cindy Capitano of Alhambra, has

graduated from a communicatiions-computer systems programming apprentice

course at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss.

He is a 1995 graduate of Temple City High School.

*Marine Pfc. Daniel Guzman, the son of Jose and Guadalupe Guzman of

Glendale, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit

Depot, San Diego.

He is a 1999 graduate of Glendale High School.
