GLENDALE -- After falling behind by 11 points at halftime, the

Burroughs High boys’ basketball team figured it would have to get things

going in the second half to have any chance at beating Venice High.

However, Venice wouldn’t allow a comeback, as it went on to outscore

the Indians by nine points in the second half to run away with an 83-63

win Thursday in semifinals of the 31st annual Burbank-Hoover Tournament

at Hoover High.

Despite the loss, Burroughs Coach Art Sullivan was pleased with his

teams’ effort.

“I’m happy with the way we played tonight,” he said. “They’re a very

good team and we stayed with them for much of the game.

“But we just didn’t have any answer for them at the start of the

second quarter, and that pretty much did us in.”

Heading into the second quarter, the score was tied at 18.

But Burroughs’ Keith Jarbo came out and scored two consecutive layups

to open the quarter, giving Burroughs a 22-18 lead.

However, the Cowboys caught fire over the remainder of the quarter, as

they ouscored the Bulldogs, 24-9, to take an 11-point lead into the half.

The Cowboys carried that momentum into the third quarter -- and at the

5:41 mark -- led, 47-31.

But Burroughs wouldn’t do down eaeily, and after Tyler Newton drained

one from inside the lane at the 2:13 mark of the third quarter, the

Indians had gone on an 11-6 run to cut the Cowboy lead to just 10.

However, the Cowboys (2-0) went on to outscore the Indians by 10 over

the remainder of the game.

Leading Venice was senior forward Montell Dunon, who had a game-high

34 points.

Teammate Kyle Morrison also had a good game with 11 points and six rebounds.

Burroughs (1-1) received good games from Jarbo and Newton. Jarbo

finished with 16 points and eight rebounds and Newton had 10 points and

12 rebounds.
