AUTRY MUSEUM OF WESTERN HERITAGE

The Autry Museum is seeking enthusiastic individuals interested in

history to join our dedicated group of tour guides. The museum is at 4700

BURBANK ANIMAL SHELTER

Volunteers are needed to help care for and find homes for animals at

the shelter, which is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and

Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, call 238-3340.

BURBANK TEMPORARY AID CENTER

Burbank Temporary Aid Center, which helps more than 2,000 poor and

homeless people each month with food, clothes and other emergency

assistance, is in need of volunteers to work one half-shift per week in

the following areas: Pantry, sorting and distributing food; clothes

house, sorting and distributing clothes; intake, interviewing clients and

assessing their needs.

SERVICE CORPS OF RETIRED EXECUTIVES

SCORE helps small businesses solve their daily problems and operate

profitably with counsel and advice. Counselors are retired executives who

work with people of all races. SCORE needs experienced, retired business

counselors willing to devote a few hours per week. Call 552-3206.

BURBANK DISTRICT OF THE RED CROSS

Volunteers are needed to serve as coordinators of disaster volunteers.

CDVs gain experience in public speaking, management of personnel and

various projects, group dynamics and interpersonal communication. No

experience is necessary. Disaster volunteers are also needed. Contact:

Volunteers are needed at the Burbank District of the American Red

Cross-Los Angeles Chapter, 1001 W. Magnolia Blvd., to assist with front

desk operations and blood services. Front desk duties include greeting

clients and answering inquiries. Clerical experience is a plus. Blood

donors at fixed sites and on bloodmobiles. Volunteers are needed to work

in the reception and canteen areas. Training is provided. Contact: The

BURBANK FIRE DEPARTMENT, DISASTER SERVICES

Volunteers are needed to perform a wide range of tasks. Assignments

will vary according to interests and abilities. No special skills or

training is required. All that is needed is the willingness to help the

community in the event of a disaster.

Upon acceptance, you will be registered with the city and issued a

community disaster volunteer card. You may choose to participate in

monthly disaster training programs and other special events. Contact:

VALLEY INTERFAITH COUNCIL, MEALS ON WHEELS

The Valley Interfaith Council needs drivers for Meals on Wheels.

Volunteers will deliver meals to homebound people of all ages in the San

Fernando Valley. Meals are picked up at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in

Van Nuys and delivered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. California driver’s

license and proof of valid insurance are required. Contact: 718-6460,

BURBANK RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (RSVP)

Volunteers, 55 years and older, are needed for the organization’s

Discovery Shops. The American Cancer Society Shop in Toluca Lake needs

volunteers to work as sales persons, cashiers and price and merchandise

screeners. No minimum hours required. Discovery Shops sell upscale resale

and gently-used merchandise, ranging from designer clothing to antiques

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA

Volunteers are needed to help children learn to play in a cheerful,

educational and supportive environment at the Boys & Girls Club of

Burbank, which is open between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Tutors are needed to help children with their homework and reading skills

for one hour per week. Volunteers are also needed to keep scores and

times for the club’s sports leagues. And, volunteers are needed to host

the reception desk.

BURBANK HIGH SCHOOL

Burbank High Career Center: filing, collation of materials for written

materials for written reports, other paper trail work as needed for

Burbank High Health Office: Clerical position, under direction of the

school nurse, includes filing, pulling health records, putting

immunization dates and concerns into files, assisting with vision and

hearing screenings, helping students who are referred to the Health

Office during the day and helping with new student registration. Monday,

GLENDALE ADVENTIST MEDICAL CENTER

Adventist Health Advantage at Glendale Adventist Center has openings

for volunteers as community outreach assistants and office assistants

CITY OF BURBANK

Wheels for Humanity: Volunteers are needed to clean and repair

wheelchairs, adjust brakes, clean and repair walkers, put rubber tips on

Home-Delivered Meals Program: Drivers are needed to deliver meals to

the homebound, frail and elderly in need. Drivers must have their own car

BEVERLY MANOR NURSING AND REHABILITATION

Beverly Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation is seeking volunteers to

assist during activities and special events, such as birthday parties,

candlelight dinners, etc. Volunteers are also needed to assist the

Medical Records Department. Duties include filing and light clerical

FAMILY SERVICE AGENCY

Family Service Agency of Burbank is looking for volunteers to staff

its Senior Peer Counseling Program. The organization needs warm, caring

individuals 55 years or older who are interested in helping their peers

cope with issues related to aging. All volunteers will be required to

take a 10-week training course focusing on counseling skills and

strategies to help seniors facilitate change and growth in their lives.

The group is especially interested in bilingual volunteers and those from

different ethnic backgrounds. The agency is at 2013 W. Magnolia Blvd.

PROVIDENCE ST. JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER

Providence St. Joseph and Holy Cross medical centers are recruiting

volunteers for hospice training. The hospice team serves both hospitals.

LOS ANGELES ZOO

The Los Angeles Zoo has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities such

as being part of its greeting team, working on special events, food

preparation, animal keeping, behavioral enrichment, general office work,

research and serving as docents.

Student volunteers are also needed. The zoo depends heavily on

volunteers for its educational programs and everyday operations, and

tries to make life better for each and every animal in its care. No

experience is necessary and volunteers can apply for special training to

become docents or take part in research projects. If you would like to

BEVERLY MANOR HEALTHCARE CENTER

Beverly Manor Healthcare Center needs volunteers to work closely with

its residents, all of whom have Alzheimer’s disease. The center has 89

residents who enjoy various activities such as sports, music, pets,

visits from adults, teens and children, and food and fun. The Therapeutic

Recreation Department needs volunteers seven days a week, any time

between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., to assist residents in activities or to simply

LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art needs volunteers to lead tours of

the facility’s permanent collections and special exhibits. Those who are

bilingual are especially needed.

Prospective docents should have an interest in studying art, public

speaking and working with children. Applicants are interviewed by an

admissions committee and those accepted must complete a year-long

training course in art history and touring techniques.

At present, 300 docents speak and tour to more than 80,000 museum

visitors a year.

STOUGH CANYON NATURE CENTER

Set to open this spring, the new Stough Canyon Nature Center is now

looking for volunteers.

Volunteer docents are needed to lead nature hikes, workshops and other

activities. Volunteers for trail maintenance and office work are also

needed.

A four-week training course, beginning in January, is required for

applicants.

Donations -- nature books, binoculars, microscopes, maps, charts and

trail maintenance tools as well as indigenous artifacts related to Native

American history, animals, birds and insects -- are always accepted.

The Stough Canyon Nature Center is part of the Burbank Parks and

Recreation Department.
