Bike officer avoids injury in collision

HILLSIDE DISTRICT -- Police officer Peter Eirich avoided injury when
his bicycle, which he uses to patrol the city, was hit by a car in an
intersection.
Eirich was headed south on Glenoaks Boulevard on his way to a call at
7:10 p.m. on April 1 when he stopped for a red light at Olive Avenue.
After he thought he made eye contact with the driver of a car that was
going west on Olive Avenue and stopped at the intersection, he rode his
bicycle into the crosswalk on a green light, police said.
The driver, a 20-year-old Burbank woman, allegedly started to make a
right turn on to Glenoaks Boulevard and hit Eirich’s bicycle, throwing
him onto its hood. The car was turning very slowly and Eirich was not
injured, Lt. Bob Giles said. The driver, who was not cited, told police
she did not see Eirich.
