A license to drive

Gary Moskowitz

BURBANK -- Burbank is getting a new opportunity to teach its teens

safer driving tactics this summer.

Until the Graduated Driver Licensing Law of 1998 was passed, many

15-year-olds studying to get their driver’s licenses were learning from a

50-year-old curriculum, Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring said.

“Teens are disproportionately involved in traffic problems as compared

to all other drivers on the road,” Spring said. “We are encouraging

parents to participate in their child’s driving education.”

The Automobile Club of Southern California will operate an Auto Club

Driving School class that will begin Aug. 28 at 1111 W. Alameda Ave.

The Burbank Unified School District provides driver’s education as a

segment of its yearlong health and careers classes, but no actual

behind-the-wheel experience is provided, said Sue Boegh, district

director of public information.

Students are taught from state-issued textbooks on driving and test

booklets issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Upon completion of

the class, students are given a certificate, which can be presented to

the DMV when applying for their driver’s licenses.
