Sister Mary St. Eleanor Flynn died Aug. 26, 2001, in Dubuque, Iowa.
She was 92.
Flynn was just 13 days short of celebrating her diamond jubilee as a
Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
She was born in Kansas City, Mo. Prior to her arrival in Burbank, the
nun taught and held school administrative positions in Illinois, Iowa and
Arizona.
She was a former principal and faculty member at Bellarmine-Jefferson
High School from 1966 to 1991.
“She was a reluctant principal for two years,” said John Flynn, alumni
director. Teaching and counseling was where she felt she was most
valuable, he said.
She taught Latin, history, religion and English. During her 25 years
at the school, she held various titles including dean of women, alumni
director, vice principal from 1972 to 1973 and principal from 1973 to
1975.
Deeply religious with an outgoing personality, Flynn was an popular
nun. Students at Bellarmine-Jefferson dedicated yearbooks in her honor
several times during her timethere.
A memorial Mass for Flynn will be at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 10, in St.
Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 133 N. 5th St. Following the Mass, a
reception will be held in the school’s auditorium in the building named
in her honor in 1980.
