Jewish holidays celebrated at Episcopal Church

HILLSIDE DISTRICT -- For the second year in a row, Temple Beth Emet
will hold Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services at St. Jude’s Episcopal
Church, 111 S. 6th St.
The temple, under the direction of Rabbi Mark Sobel, has a larger
attendance at the High Holiday services than its facility, at 600 N.
Buena Vista St., can hold.
Last year, temple members searched for a facility to hold their
services and found that St. Jude’s, directed by the Rev. Chuck Mitchell,
opened its doors to them.
With no request for a usage fee, the church offered the Jewish
congregation the use of its facility, setting an example of community
interaction and ecumenicism -- togetherness between members of Christian
and Jewish religions.
During the temple’s choir rehearsal Wednesday, Mitchell was in
attendance along with the rabbi and Cantor Rachel Hollander.
Rosh Hashana is observed this year Monday and Tuesday. Yom Kippur is
Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.
