NORTHWEST DISTRICT -- Burbank Kiwanis for Fun served burgers and

chicken sandwiches to students at Bret Harte Elementary School Saturday

during a special “Burgers and Books” event. School faculty and parents

participated in a book fair Saturday. About 300 people attended the

event, which sold $4,000 in books. Book titles at Saturday’s book fair

varied from “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” Harry Potter and Charlie and the

Chocolate Factory to classics like “Great Expectations.” Book prices were

as cheap as $1 and as much as $25 for a hardcover book. In the past,

money from Bret Harte’s book fairs has purchased items like choir risers.
