Community leaders recognized
Retired judge Marion E. Gubler of Glendale and attorney Victor L.
Walch of Burbank received the Spirit of America Awards at the annual
Fourth of July Flag Raising ceremony at the Hall of Liberty, Forest
Lawn Hollywood Hills. They received the recognition because of their
commitment to family, community and church.
Gubler was a trial court judge in the state of California for more
than 21 years, presiding in Municipal and Superior Courts in Burbank.
He also served two terms as president of the L.A. County Presiding
Judges Assn.
He was a member of the Burbank Rotary Club for 30 years, and is on
the board of the Glendale Religious Leaders Assn., among other
involvements.
He and his wife, Doris, celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary
in March. They are the parents of seven children and 15
grandchildren.
Walch began his law practice in Burbank after graduating from
George Washington University in 1965. He is a longtime community
service volunteer, associated with Rotary Club, Goodwill Industries
of Southern California, Salvation Army, Burbank Leadership, Verdugo
Hills and Greater Los Angeles Boy Scout Council, among others.
He and his wife, Carole Marie, were married in 1958. They have
nine children and two foster children.
Both Gubler and Walch have held numerous leadership position in
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
This annual event is presented by the Glendale and North Hollywood
Stakes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Honor for preserving history
Mary Jane Strickland was honored by the Conference of California
Historical Societies at its June meeting at the Konocti Harbor Resort
& Spa in Kelseyville, Lake County, Calif.
Strickland was awarded the prestigious Waddingham/Doctor award,
which recognizes individuals who have worked the minimum of 25
continuous yeas in historical preservation. Strickland will clock in
30 years in 2003 with the Burbank Historical Society.
She and her husband, Harry, started the society and built the
Gordon R. Howard Museum, which is filled with artifacts and exhibits
touting the history of the city of Burbank.
Recognized by honor society
Scott Wiggins, the son of Bill and Marilyn Wiggins of Burbank,
recently completed his sophomore year at California Polytechnic State
University, and has been recognized by the Golden Key International
Honor Society as being in the top 10% of his sophomore class and will
be inducted next fall on the campus of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
Last November, Scott was also inducted into the National Society
of Collegiate Scholars.
While at Burbank’s St. Francis Xavier School, he played volleyball
and basketball, receiving the eighth-grade’s Outstanding
Scholar/Athlete award. He graduated maxima cum laude from Notre Dame
High School in 2000 with a grade-point average of 4.23, was awarded
Certificates of Excellence in five subjects, and selected as the
Outstanding Math and Science Student of his graduating class.
He serves as scholarship chairman for his fraternity, Sigma Alpha
Epsilon, and plans to graduate with a double major in finance and
business management.
Students graduate
Varand Ghazikhanian, a Burbank resident, graduated from Georgetown
University in Washington, D.C.
Burbank students who have graduated from Azusa Pacific University
are Christopher J. Karman, who received a bachelor’s degree in
business administration; Stella B. Keshishian, who earned a
bachelor’s degree in nursing; and Ginny Lee Masterani who received a
bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Ryan Earl Sebastian, the son of Roland and Jan Marie Sebastian of
Burbank, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical science
with a minor in aviation safety from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University in Prescott, Ariz. He is a graduate of John Burroughs High
School.
Briana Ramsay graduated from The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor,
Conn. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bahram N. Rad of Burbank.
At Loomis Chaffee, she was an honor roll student. She will attend Cal
State Northridge in the fall.
