Fire sends ‘Pirates’ fleeing

A fire Tuesday caused by a chemical reaction destroyed the set of

a feature film production at Walt Disney Studios, officials said.

The blaze, which started about 9:30 a.m. inside Stage 2, caused

$300,000 damage to the set and its props and $50,000 damage to the

structure. Stage 2 is one of the studio’s larger stages in the middle

of the campus, Fire Marshal Dave Starr said.

The two-alarm fire was caused by the reaction of a wire tool,

which ignited with bonding glue and set materials, Starr said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about an hour.

The crew of about 50 set workers were evacuated along with several

employees from nearby buildings. No one was injured.

The set was being readied for the upcoming Disney feature film

“Pirates of the Caribbean.”
