Eminem shows guile in his debut ‘8 Mile’
REEL CRITIC
Matt Bellner of Burbank is an actor.
“8 Mile” is about a white rapper growing up in Detroit in 1995. It
is the screen debut of Eminem. It co-stars Brittany Murphy (“Summer
Catch”) and Kim Basinger (“Cool World”).
I thought this film was a little slow and dragged at times, but
director Curtis Hanson kept it moving with rhymes.
The main character is a kid named Rabbit, who lives with his
white-trash mom with a bingo-gambling habit.
I liked the story since it is based on fact and a little fiction,
but I also enjoyed the black-and-white friction.
“8 Mile” is a cross between “Rocky” and “Purple Rain,” with
extremely good music and a whole lot of pain.
Believe it or not, Eminem’s acting is quite good, and the entire
production was shot in his old Detroit ‘hood.
The look of the film is gritty and rough, and the supporting cast
is talented and tough.
“8 Mile” is about over- coming one’s fears and Rabbit confronts
his by rapping against peers.
The movie is good, not great, but if you’re an Eminem fan and miss
it, that’s a mistake.
My review was written with rhyme, check the paper for a show time.
“8 Mile” is rated R for strong language, sexuality, some violence
and drug use.
