‘Catch a Wave’ workshop at Autry

GRIFFITH PARK -- Explore currents and tides of the Pacific Ocean

by conducting experiments and making a tide mobile as part of a

family workshop at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage.

The workshop is from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

After the “Catch a Wave” workshop, participants can view the

exhibition titled “Ocean View: The Depiction of Southern California

Coastal Lifestyle.”

The museum is at 4700 Wes- tern Heritage Way in Griffith Park.

The workshop and exhibit are free with museum admission. Admission

is $7.50, seniors and students with valid ID are $5 and children 12

and younger are $3. Parking is free.

‘Story of the Hidden Jews’ at museum

GRIFFITH PARK -- Art Benveniste, president of the Society for

Crypto-Judaic Studies, presents a lecture, “Conversos: The Story of

the Hidden Jews,” at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Wells Fargo Theatre of the

Autry Museum of Western Heritage.

The Conversos are Spanish-speaking Jews who were forced to hide

their faith during the Spanish Inquisition. Now, more than 500 years

and 20 generations later, many still retain their Jewish customs and

traditions.

The event is $5, plus paid museum admission. Admission is $7.50,

seniors and students with valid ID are $5 and children ages 12 and

younger are $3. Parking is free.

Start New Year the ‘Smarter Weigh’

MEDIA DISTRICT WEST -- Providence St. Joseph Medical Center’s

Fitness Center is conducting “Smarter Weigh,” a 10-week weight-

management program from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Tuesday.

The weekly program, with an emphasis on preventive health care and

the emotional aspects of eating, combines dietary and exercise

education, individual meal planning, fitness counseling and

supervised exercise classes.

Cost is $425 per person, with a $50 deposit required to hold a

space in the program.

The fitness center is at 501 S. Buena Vista St.
