Indians shine in elite event
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Burroughs in the Ayala Tournament: The Indians played well in the
event that ended Tuesday and featured 64 teams.
The Indians finished 10th, losing to Brea-Olinda 41-35, in the
ninth-place game. Tulyah Gaines scored 17 points for Burroughs (11-5)
-- ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division IIA.
Gaines also had a huge performance in a 69-48 win against
Riverside Poly, netting 35 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and
five steals. Fabi Zavala added 22 points.
In a 46-44 victory against Santa Fe Springs St. Paul, Gaines had
21 points.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Burbank junior varsity 84, Bell-Jeff junior varsity 47: Narbeh
Awanessi poured in 27 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists Dec. 20 to
pace the Bulldogs to a nonleague victory.
Serob Hannesyan, Webster Cortez and Hakop Sogoyan all had 10
points.
Burbank in Calabasas Junior Varsity Tournament: Hakop Sogoyan led
all scorers Monday as the Bulldogs rolled to a 67-60 tournament win
against Crespi.
Narbeh Awanessi added 20 points and 10 rebounds and David Dickman
had nine points -- all on three-pointers -- for Burbank (4-6)
BOYS’ SOCCER
Burroughs in Trabuco Hills Mustang Tournament: After falling in
the opening-round match to Santa Ana, 3-2, in overtime, the Indians
finished the event Dec. 27 with three victories.
The Indians (7-4-1) defeated El Toro, 4-0, Santa Ana Valley, 2-1,
and Southwest, 2-1, in consolation matches.
Jason Salazar and Chris Leiva tallied two goals each in the
tourney, and Sean Lowe -- his eighth -- and Matt Welch had goals.
Freshmen Kevin Cardenas and Spencer Ross were brought up for the
tournament and both played well.
