Kepenekian’s shot lifts Burbank to win
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Burbank 52, Valencia 49: Bulldog senior Christine Kepenekian has
hit her share of big shots during her four-year varsity career.
However, her effort Friday against the visiting Vikings might have
been her best yet, as it lifted Burbank to a Foothill League victory.
Kepenekian hit a long-range, game-winning three-pointer at the
buzzer for the Bulldogs’ first league victory.
Kepenekian -- a former Leader All-Area Player of the Year --
scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds and teammate Roxy Quintero
poured in 17 points
Bell-Jeff 54, La Salle 33: The Guards (5-0 in league) remained
undefeated in the Sunshine League on Saturday with a win on the road.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Providence 47, Yeshiva 44: Harout Messrelian scored 25 of his
team’s 47 points to lead Providence (13-2, 6-1 in league) Saturday in
a Liberty League game in the Pioneers’ gym.
The Pioneers are in second place in league.
Valencia 68, Burbank 47: The Bulldogs had no answer for Viking
Allen Husted -- 18 points -- Friday as the Bulldogs remained winless
in the Foothill League with a loss on the road.
Bell Jeff 55, St. Genevieve 34: Clarence Viray and Brian Alfaro
each scored 16 points to lead host Bell-Jeff (9-7, 1-1) Friday in a Santa Fe League road game.
After falling behind, 14-9, after the first quarter, Bell-Jeff
outscored the Valiants, 31-13, in the second half.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Burroughs 1, Saugus 0: The Indians claimed their first Foothill
League win Friday by defeating the visiting Centurions.
The Indians got the only goal they needed in the 20th minute when
Rebeca Mendez scored on an assist from Sonia Segory.
“Out defense played very well,” Burroughs Coach Mike Marcos said.
“We have been playing well, we only lost to Hart, 1-0.
In goal, Justine McCabe was kept busy, stopping 14 shots.
