Burroughs back in title hunt
BOYS’ SOCCER
Burroughs 2, Hart 1: Burroughs climbed into second place in the
Foothill League with a win Tuesday at Luther Burbank Middle School.
Burroughs (11-7-2, 4-2-1 in league) is tied for second with Hart
(12-3-6, 4-2-1) and trails league-leading Canyon (15-11-2, 5-1-1).
It is Burroughs’ fourth straight 2-1 league victory.
The winning goal was scored by Burroughs’ Chris Leiva in the 78th
minute.
Down, 1-0, at the half, Burroughs tied the score early in the
second half when Sean Lowe made good on a shot by Michael Barbic that
hit the crossbar.
Freshman Kevin Cardenas got the win in goal for the Indians.
Canyon 6, Burbank 0: The Bulldogs remained winless in the Foothill
League Friday with a loss at Canyon.
The Bulldogs fell behind, 5-0, at the half.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Valencia 4, Burbank 2: Caroline Chrzan and Abby Castellon scored
goals for the Bulldogs Tuesday in a Foothill League loss at Valencia.
Burbank (7-11-3, 0-7) led at the half, 1-0.
Canyon 1, Burbank 0: The Bulldogs played well Friday but lost a
Foothill League match to the Cowgirls at Burbank.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Providence 39, Avalon 29: The Pioneers remained in the race for a
Liberty League championship Saturday with a victory at home.
Selina Tech paced the Pioneers (16-3, 7-1) with 11 points.
Teammate Megan Campbell added nine points, 15 rebounds and five
blocks.
Providence 47, Avalon 37: The Pioneer tandem of Selina Tech and
Natalie Guzman was too much for the Lancers Friday in a Liberty
League game at Providence.
Tech had 18 points and Guzman had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six
steals.
Saugus 91, Burbank 43: Despite 22 points from Christine
Kepenekian, the Bulldogs fell Friday in a Foothill League game at
home.
The Bulldogs (12-10, 1-5) got off to a rocky start, as the
Centurions jumped out to a 25-13 lead after the first quarter.
Valencia 62, Burroughs 38: The Indians couldn’t get their offense
rolling Friday, falling in a home Foothill League loss.
Burroughs (11-9, 1-5) will likely not finish among the top three
teams in league after claiming third place last season.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Saugus 83, Burbank 43: The Bulldogs couldn’t recover from a first
quarter in which they were outscored, 21-12, Friday in a Foothill
League loss on the road.
Kamen Lane scored 15 points and Brandon Maskell added 13 for
Burbank (0-19. 0-6).
Valencia 83, Burroughs 53: Joey Paysinger scored 16 points Friday for the Indians in a Foothill League road loss.
After trailing, 16-15, after the first quarter, Burroughs (10-11,
1-5) was outscored, 27-12, in the second quarter.
Verbum Dei 72, Bell-Jeff 48: A depleted Guards’ team did all it
could to try to hang with the Eagles on Friday in a Santa Fe League
game at Bell-Jeff.
Bell-Jeff (9-11, 1-4) had just six players suited up for the game
against Verbum Dei, which is ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section
Division IVA. Three Guard players are injured and three missed the
game because they were taking part in a religious retreat.
Brendon Doyle scored 15 points and had nine rebounds and Max
Perrin added 13 points.
