Indian win brings them home
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Burroughs 57, West Torrance 37: Fabi Zavala scored 16 points and
Tulyah Gaines added 10 on Thursday in leading the visiting Indians to
a Division IIA opening-game win.
Burroughs (14-12) will host Ventura at 7:30 tonight in a
second-round game. Ventura (16-10) defeated Placentia Valencia,
64-41, in an opening-round game Thursday.
Ventura (16-10) is the third-place team from the Channel League.
The Indians -- an at-large entry from the Foothill League -- came
out firing against the Warriors (18-9), outscoring them, 15-4, in the
first quarter.
The Warriors won a Pioneer League title.
“Our players just came out pumped up and ready to go,” Burroughs
Coach Doug Nicol said.
“We played great defense and Fabi was hitting her shots, and
that’s what got us going.”
Zavala hit three three-pointers in the first quarter and a fourth
to open the fourth quarter.
“For us to beat a league champion just shows how tough the
Foothill League is,” Nicol said. “Our league really prepares us for
the playoffs.”
Ventura Buena 61, Burbank 52: Despite 28 points from Christine
Kepenekian, the Bulldogs couldn’t pull off the upset Thursday in a
first round Division IIAA game at Buena.
Lauren Woodward of Buena (18-7) had 16 points and Cory Edwards
added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bulldogs end the season 12-15 after finishing sixth in the
Foothill League.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Santa Margarita 17, Burbank 0: The visiting Bulldogs had a tough
time in their Division I opening match, falling to the Eagles.
Santa Margarita (19-8) is the No. 3 seed in the division
Burbank, which made its first postseason appearance in the
program’s three years, finishes the season 13-9. It placed third in
the Almont League.
