Young speakers recognized by Optimist club
SERVICE CLUBS
The Magnolia Park Optimist Club recently sponsored an oratorical
contest for Burbank youth in Trevor Hall at the First United
Methodist Church. The young speakers impressed the club with their
excellent delivery and thoughtful subjects.
Dave Kemp, newly elected member of the Burbank school board, Ken
Adrainse and Diane Berger, principal of Bret Harte Elementary School,
were on hand to judge the speeches. The judges were asked to base
their criteria on speaking, timing, delivery, content, preparation
and how well each participant carried out the theme “United We Stand
In Optimism.”
The winners for the boys were: first place, James Berman of John
Muir Middle School; second place, Sunny Jass of Miller Elementary;
and third place, Vicken Antounian, also of John Muir Middle School.
The winners for the girls were: first place, Nare Torosyan of John
Muir Middle School; second place, Lis Seward of John Burroughs High
School; and third place, Sevana Zadourian of John Muir Middle School.
Hanna Kolus of Miller Elementary School also received a Certificate
of Appreciation for her strong performance.

CLUB HOLDS RECORD FOR HAVING OPTIMISTIC SPEAKERS
Under the tutelage of Bob Ventura, the Burbank Optimist Club
continues its tradition of having interesting speakers. One that
recently stood out was Andor Dyunmai.
Dyunmai gave a talk about market interest rates and how the market
will perform in the post-Iraqi war period.
It is generally a tough subject to get people excited about, let
alone understand. His talk did both, and you will probably see him
again on the service club speaking circuit here in town.
Kudos to Bob for getting him to speak at his group first.
Burbank Optimist Club meets at noon Thursdays at the Anabelle
Hotel, 2011 W. Olive Ave. For membership information, call Bob
Ventura at 506-8714.
