Gregory Bowman
BURBANK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT
Gregory Bowman was appointed the school district’s interim
superintendent in April 2002 after former Supt. David Aponik was
fired. In July, the board overwhelmingly appointed Bowman
superintendent when it became apparent he was being considered by
another district for its top spot. Bowman took over the helm during a
tumultuous period in the school district when it was faced with a
multimillion-dollar budget deficit due to the increasing cost of
special education, reduced revenues from the state and the rising
costs of health benefits and worker’s compensation costs, as well as
mistakes made by the district’s previous fiscal management team.
Bowman came to work for the district in 1994 in the newly created
position of assistant superintendent of educational and support
services.
In addition to his long workdays, Bowman gives of his time to the
Burbank Family YMCA, where he is a member of the board of directors.
He is on the super- intendent’s advisory groups at USC School of
Education and UCLA School of Education, and is a member of the
President’s Council of Woodbury University.
In his limited leisure time, Bowman enjoys reading and working in
his yard.
Bowman’s wife Carolyn is a teacher and is his greatest supporter.
He calls her “my rock.”
