Matthew Warren Baker, Burbank High School Class of 1996
co-valedictorian and ARCO AM/PM CIF Southern Section Scholar-Athlete
of the Year (1995-1996), graduated with honors from Harvard
University, receiving his bachelor’s degree in East Asian studies
with an emphasis on Chinese literature and culture.
He took leave from Harvard following his first year to serve a
two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
in Taiwan, where he learned to speak, read and write the Chinese
language.
While in college, Baker was a member of the junior varsity
basketball squad, was captain and participated in several intramural
championship teams in basketball, football and volleyball, was
engaged in youth mentoring and tutoring programs in the community,
and helped to lead the college-wide Latter-day Saints Student Assn.
He has now returned home to Burbank to write songs and
screenplays, while pursuing employment opportunities in the
entertainment industry.
His parents are longtime Burbank residents George and Maureen
Baker.
Dimas Martinez of Burbank has enrolled at the Universal Technical
Institute in Phoenix, Ariz.
He plans to start coursework in October and will train to become a
professional air conditioning, refrigeration and heating technician.
