Gun legislation passes state Senate

BURBANK -- Legislation by state Sen. Jack Scott (D-Burbank)

designed to protect people from unsafe handguns passed the Senate on

Monday by a 22-16 vote.

Scott’s bill, SB 489, requires that new handgun models introduced

after Jan. 1, 2005 have either a chamber load indicator or a magazine

disconnect mechanism.

The bill also requires that after Jan. 1, 2007, new handgun models

be equipped with both devices. A load indicator shows a gun owner

whether a bullet is in the chamber. A magazine safety disconnect

prevents the gun from being fired when the magazine is removed, even

when a bullet remains in the chamber.

The bill now goes to the Assembly Public Safety Committee.
