Saluting the best of the area

With just one local team winning a league championship during the

2002-03 school year, some might call it an off-year.

However, while squads did struggle to bring home titles, the

drought was more than made up for with a fine group of athletes and

accomplishments.

Whether it was playing in a CIF Southern Section championship

game, making it to state competition or advancing deep into the

playoffs, the area had its share of fine teams.

The area also had its share of thrilling moments. Teams from

Burbank, Burroughs, Bellarmine-Jefferson and Providence highs

provided their share of upsets, stunning last-second finishes, huge

league victories and record-setting wins.

Along with good teams, the year also featured an impressive lineup

of outstanding athletes and accomplishments.

Here is a look at the teams and athletes who left a lasting

impression on the local high scene this past school year.
