Summer reading clubs a hit
A huge thank you to the Friends of the Burbank Library, the
children’s librarians, and all others involved in the summer reading
clubs for children at our Burbank public libraries.
It clearly took much effort, financial resources and creativity,
but it was all deeply appreciated by our family and many of our
friends. Our almost-first-grader had to read 15 books for school
over the summer, and the library’s inspired program with required
book reports rewarded by performers, contests and raffles made this
process a treat rather than a chore.
We even came back early from vacation at our children’s request so
they could see two of their favorite performers -- the Jumbo Shrimp
Circus and storyteller Jim Cogan. The logistics of having both
preschool and elementary programs running at all libraries for so
many weeks must have been daunting, but we appreciated the
opportunity to participate as our schedule allowed.
The library staff at the new Buena Vista branch has amazing
statistics about increased participation in and completion of the
summer program, so we need to offer our thanks as well to the
taxpayers and community leaders of Burbank, whose vision to build a
new library has inspired our youngest citizens to be such great
summer readers.
