Airport to install charging units

AIRPORT DISTRICT -- The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport

Authority on Tuesday reached an agreement with Southwest Airlines to

install electric charging units at all Bob Hope Airport aircraft

gates by the end of the summer, according to a press release.

The authority will pay $500,000 to install the charging units,

giving Southwest incentive to switch to electric-powered ground

equipment, Airport Authority President Charles Lombardo stated in the

release. The new units will help reduce air pollution, Lombardo said.

Southwest will replace about 40 diesel baggage tugs, air stairs,

baggage loading conveyors and pushback tractors with battery-powered

equipment by 2005, the release stated. Southwest carries nearly 70%

of airport passengers annually, and operates two-thirds of all

ground-service equipment at the airport.
