Burbank shoots way to top

GIRLS’ GOLF

Foothill League Match No. 2: It got a little crowded at the top of

the Foothill League standings after Tuesday’s contest at Vista

Valencia Golf Course.

With a second-place effort in the event, Burbank is tied with

three other teams -- Hart, Saugus and Valencia -- for first place in

league. All the teams have nine points.

The Bulldogs will have a chance to take sole possession of first

place Tuesday at the third league match at El Cariso Golf Course in

Sylmar.

“We are just going to have to shoot our hearts out when we play on

Tuesday,” Burbank Coach Jackie Friedman said. “We want to get that

first-place spot in league.”

Saugus -- which finished fourth in the first league contest last

week -- won the second installment with a team total of 198. It was

followed by the Bulldogs (207), Hart (211), Valencia (212), Canyon

(224) and Burroughs (239).

“I told my players that even though they were fourth last week,

Saugus would probably win [Tuesday’s] match,” Friedman said. “We have

to beat Saugus.”

The Bulldogs’ were led by senior Grace Woo, who tied Saugus’

Melanie DeLeon for low-medalist honors, as they both shot

two-under-par 33s.

Bethany Glassford and Amanda Keith shot 39s, Katie Ahn had a 47

and Michelle Chon and Jenna Todd had 50s for Burbank.

For Burroughs, Danie Caffey shot a 42, Sydney Dunivant had a 44,

Destanie Michaels had a 49, Jenn Jennings and Ally Petroski had 52s

and Heather Isaacs had a 59.

Burbank 211, La Puente 284: Bulldog senior Grace Woo put together

a fine effort Thursday in leading her team to a nonleague victory at

Whittier Narrows Golf Course.

Woo fired a two-under-par 33 to capture low-medalist honors.

Teammate Bethany Glassford shot an even-par 35, Amanda Keith had a

36, Katie Ahn had a 50 and Deborah Gatton had a 57.

Burbank is 10-7.

Valencia 218, Burroughs 285: The Indians dropped to 3-15-1 with a

nonleague loss Thursday at Woodley Lakes Golf Course.

Danie Caffey and Ally Petroski shot 13-over-par 50s, Jenn Jennings

had a 54, Sydney Dunivant had a 57 and Heather Isaacs had a 74 for

Burroughs.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Providence d. Oakwood, 25-18, 25-13, 25-23: The Pioneers remained

in the hunt for a Liberty League championship with a win Thursday at

home.

Vanessa Amran had 13 assists and Shannon McShane added 10 digs for

Providence (8-3, 4-1).

Marlborough d. Bellarmine-Jefferson, 25-18, 25-19, 25-8: The

Guards fell in the Sunshine League match Tuesday at home.

Bell-Jeff (2-9, 0-6) was paced by Jessica Alvarez, who had four

kills and four digs. Teammate Christina Lim had two aces, two blocks

and one dig and Gina Van Dyke had six assists.

Marlborough junior varsity d. Bellarmine-Jefferson junior varsity,

25-21, 25-23, 16-14: The Guards played well in the Sunshine League

loss Tuesday.

Rachel Massey led the Guards (3-8, 0-6) with six digs, five kills

and one ace. Teammate Laura Garcia had six kills, Nicole Diller had

four kills and 12 assists and Esme Barragan had seven digs.
