Airport ‘gadflies’

ought to be heard

Some members of the Burbank Chamber of Commerce are critical of

the airport gadflies and their behavior at City Council meetings.

They were referred to as “loose cannons who are allowed to say

whatever they wish” and “the endless parade of council meeting

regulars try to whip up everybody on the airport issue,” in form

letters written by the chamber, to be sent to the council. There are

others in our community who share their views.

Some members of Burbank Voters & Taxpayers identify with the

gadflies’ criticisms. In fact, some might belong to the organization.

The council passed the airport agreement 4 to 1. The Burbank

Leader went into detail over the content of the agreement (“City

gives OK to airport agreement,” Jan. 26). Burbank Voters & Taxpayers

founder Carolyn Berlin would like the public to vote on it, but that

is why we elect representatives. They are charged with that

responsibility. We can see at the state level how initiatives work

when voted for. They are cast in concrete. They require another vote

to change it and sometimes require a court case to interpret it. Let

the legislative bodies create and vote on legislation with input from

the citizenry.

Let’s try to work together on an agreement. It won’t be perfect.

Nothing is.
