GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The board approved revisions made to graduation requirements that

would allow students to substitute language units for vocational and

career-technical requirements.

High school students will be allowed to substitute 30 units of one

foreign language for their vocational and career-technical

requirement.

WHAT IT MEANS

Students in high school can now apply 30 units of the same foreign

language to satisfy the vocational and career-technical graduation

requirement.

This change will allow college-bound students class options that

will ease their schedules, Sue Boegh, director of educational support

services said.

NEW HISTORY TEXTBOOK

The board adopted the advanced placement European history textbook

titled “A History of the Modern World,” published by McGraw-Hill.

WHAT IT MEANS

The cost is $84 per book and will be used in advanced placement

history classes next school year.

Resource materials on the Armenian genocide will continue to be

supplied to teachers by the California Board of Education to

supplement the text.

NEW STORM DRAIN

The board voted to approve a contract for a storm drain system at

John Burroughs High School that will handle larger volumes of rain.

The existing storm drain system was unable to handle the season’s

heavy rains and water overflowed into the gym.

WHAT IT MEANS

The construction bid awarded for the storm/trench drain system is

$280,400.
