Their time in the sun

OLIVE PARK ? The weather wasn’t the only thing that was hot Saturday at Olive Park.
Temperatures close to the 100-degree mark couldn’t stop the heated competition taking place between hundreds of Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Department Hap Minor baseball players.
Despite the annoying weather, the athletes were determined to have a good time at the 51st annual Burbank Civitan Day Jamboree.
The day began with a parade at the Burbank Media City Center Mall. The parade made its way to Olive Park where the skills competition took place. In the skills competition, players took part in four events ? hitting for distance, throwing for accuracy, baserunning and throwing for distance ? and won awards for their accomplishments.
The most prestigious award of the afternoon was given to Cal Tribe’s Steven Rodriguez, who named the Jackie Arrington Memorial Award winner.
Every year, the honor is given to an athlete who displays good sportsmanship, team leadership and an enjoyment of the game.
Hap Minor is the biggest and longest-running baseball league in the city, and its season runs concurrently with Burbank’s biggest softball league ? Ponytail Softball.
The players will get a chance to take part in their own end-of-the-season festivities when the Ponytail Softball Jamboree, sponsored by the Foothill Civitan Club, is held Saturday at Olive Park.
NOTE: See Saturday’s Leader for the complete skills competition results.
