REEL CRITIC:’300’ reasons to see this film

Do you like movies about gladiators? It’s a simple question and a famous quote from one of my favorite films. I happen to like gladiator movies and I could give you 300 reasons why I loved “300,” but my editor would never let that happen.

The film is based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel about the battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans fought the 100,000-strong Persian Army.

King Xerxes, the Persian ruler, wants the Spartan king, Leonidas, to surrender and bow before his feet. If he does this, Xerxes will spare his life. Can the Spartans hold on until reinforcements arrive? Will Leonidas really kneel before his hated enemy? All questions are answered in 117 minutes.

Time for Matt’s disclaimer — “300” is not historically accurate. The entire production is based on a comic book about a moment in history. If you’re looking for legitimate knowledge about the conflict, I suggest visiting the library and reading a book. If you want quality entertainment, then by all means, see “300.”

Many people are complaining about this film. They need to relax. It is unique. I’ve never seen anything like it. The entire production is basically one long digital effect with real actors inserted into scenes. Normally, I don’t like too many computer-generated images in my action movies but the director, Zack Snyder, stays true to the comic book escapism and therefore I bought into the experience.

The biggest star of “300” is Gerard Butler, who plays King Leonidas. I’m a big fan of Butler and he shines in this career-altering role. The audience, and especially my friend, Quynh, couldn’t get enough of Butler’s very revealing performance. My female neighbors often complain that there is not enough male nudity in current cinema. But “300” solves that problem in the first 30 minutes.

Many mainstream reviewers have criticized the amount of violence in “300,” but I have to disagree. Good grief, it’s a war movie. What did they expect? The violence is actually tastefully done. Besides, it’s only computer gore. I’ve seen much worse on Fox News.

Interwoven within the battle scenes is a timeless love story and believe it or not, “300” makes a serviceable date movie; but leave the grandparents at home.

Since the scope is so grand, I recommend seeing “300” at a top-notch theater. I did not and I regret that fact.

Because the movie is so well done, it’s impossible for me to sum up “300” in 300 words or less. For that, I bow before you and surrender my keyboard.
