The board recognized its “Classified Staff Members of the Year” in the district’s maintenance, instructional services, office services, food services and special services department.

Oscar Cordova, a senior custodian; Estela Sermeno, an instructional assistant; Susie Dunn, a food services operations technician; Jose Ontiveros, a food services utility driver; and Louis Dy, a technology support specialist, were all honored with certificates of recognition.

WHAT IT MEANS

To qualify for the recognition, employees must have worked in the district for at least five years, demonstrating positive character traits, outstanding work performance and positive interactions with colleagues to create a better work environment.

The board unanimously approved a $3.9-million bid from Harik Construction to perform modernization work at Monterey High School.

Upgrade plans include a redesign of the administration area — adding a defined waiting area, nurse’s office, storage room and general counter space.

Classrooms are slated to receive new flooring, suspended acoustical ceiling, tackable wall surfaces and paint.

The project will also remove hazardous material from the campus, such as any lead paint or asbestos.

WHAT IT MEANS

Construction is to begin in July and slated to be finished by October 2009.
