On the Town:
The Valentine’s Day weekend was ushered in on a musical and theatrical note as the John Burroughs High School Instrumental Music Assn. and the Burbank Senior Arts Company Theatre staged respective performances Friday evening.
The Holiday Inn Burbank Media Center served as the venue for the Burroughs Instrumental Music Assn.’s “Second Annual Swing Night” benefit concert. Friends, family and supporters were treated to a selection of popular tunes arranged for big band, and performed by the school’s Jazz Ensemble, which benefited by performing in a professional setting with an interactive audience.
Under the direction of Tana Barnett, who serves as the school’s director of instrumental music, Friday’s performers included Brad and Aaron Sandoval, Anais Hayes, Brandon Olivas, Meaghan Ryan, Colin Valenzuela-Seaver, William Miniear, Josh Bailey, Mitchell Lynn, Andy Ordonez, Jeremy Asuncion, Connor Maddern, Evan Jung, Harry Levin, Nick Stratton, Shannon Cain, Jordan Curcuruto and Brandon Combs.
Attended by outgoing school Supt. Kevin Jolly and Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Board Chairman Whit Prouty, Friday’s Mardi Gras-themed event was co-chaired by Suzanne Ryan and Aileen Connors, and made possible by their committee comprising Vivian Tom, Robert Jung, Cherie Fryman, Roland Armstorff, Sandie Seaver and Claudia Jimenez.
Right around the corner from the Holiday Inn, the Burbank Senior Artists Colony was also abuzz on Friday evening as the Burbank Senior Arts Company Theatre staged “SeniorMismatch.com” in the facility’s Performance Theatre.
The play, written by Colony resident Teddi Shattuck, included performances by Sally Connors, Gene and Glorya Schklair, James King, Dolly Brittan, Scott Crawford and guest performer Hector Espanosa. Under the co-direction of Joseph Caro and Shari Shattuck, Friday’s production included the music of Betti Vincent.
Following the production, performers, Colony residents and guests enjoyed an after-party in the complex’s Hollywood-themed clubhouse.
The Burbank Senior Artists Colony is a residential community dedicated to providing exceptional independent living in a creative, art-inspired environment.
