A 42-year-old Burbank man fell to his death at the Grand Canyon National Park on Friday as he reportedly attempted to hop from one rim outcropping to another, according to the National Park Service.

The man, identified as Andrew N. Stires, fell 500 feet around 1 p.m. just off the trail between Pipe Creek Vista and the visitor center on the South Rim of the canyon, according the agency.

A Forest Service representative could not be reached.

Authorities were unable to recover his body until Saturday due to high winds and thunderstorm activity. His body was located by National Park Service helicopter crew returning from flight below the rim, according to the agency.

Calls to a number listed for Stires were not answered Tuesday. Officials at Glendale Community College confirmed that he was not an employee of the same name who manages a laboratory.
