Rocket’s red glare? Nope, that’s illegal

With temperatures expected to reach the high 90s this holiday weekend, authorities are warning Burbank residents to celebrate July 4 responsibly.

Burbank Police Sgt. Robert Quesada reminded residents that all fireworks are illegal, and those found to be in possession of them face fines and possible jail time.

“We want everybody to have a good time and enjoy themselves, but you have to be responsible,” Quesada said.

Despite the annual warnings, the July 4 weekend typically brings its own set of headaches for public safety officials responding to emergencies brought on by alcohol.

“We know people are going to drink alcohol, but do it responsibly and definitely don’t drive; there are going to be lots of people out and about,” Quesada said. “Every year, we try to get the word out, and every year there are accidents.”

Alcohol and illegal fireworks can also be a dangerous combination, he added.

“[People] make mistakes and do dumb things,” Quesada said.

Burbank Fire Capt. Ron Bell said firefighters, along with police, will be patrolling the city for illegal fireworks.

“Let common sense be your guide,” Bell said. “Don’t bring them into town; even possession is illegal.”

Fines for fireworks possession range from $50 to $500, he said.

For those who have yet to finalize their Fourth of July plans, the Burbank Starlight Bowl still has tickets available to what is being billed as the “best fireworks show in all of Los Angeles.”

The July 4 program includes a flyover and a performance by the Burbank Philharmonic. The program also kicks off the Starlight Bowl’s summer concert series, which includes a Beatles tribute July 24.
