Obituary: Bettie Zipfel, 90, hospital volunteer

Elizabeth “Bettie” Jane Zipfel died June 27 at a Burbank hospital. She was 90.

She was born on Aug. 5, 1920 in Los Angeles, and lived in Burbank for 64 years.

Zipfel was a volunteer at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center for more than 40 years. She was an active Providence St. Joseph Guild member for 40 some years, serving in several capacities, including toy buyer for the hospital gift shop. She also belonged to the Epicurean Book Worms Book Club for more than 20 years.

She was preceded in death five weeks earlier by her husband of 68 years, Rowen D. Zipfel.

She is survived by her daughter, Pam Kirkwood; grandson Kris Kirkwood; granddaughter Kirsten Kirkwood; and great-grandsons Kristian “Rowen” Kirkwood and Caleb Cook-Wickline.

Private family graveside services were held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations in Bettie Zipfel’s memory to the American Lung Assn., 3325 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 900, Los Angeles, 90010.
