Burbank school celebrates Literature Week with a reading marathon
Parents, community members and school district officials descended on Providencia Elementary to read books to students for more than an hour Friday morning.
The 20th annual tradition brought nearly 60 volunteers to the campus to read to students in kindergarten through fifth grade and was part of the school’s long-standing “Literature Week.”
The reading marathon is one of the most beloved events by students, said Amy Walker, a curriculum specialist and teacher at the school.
“We block off the whole morning just for this. The kids look forward to it,” Walker said. “They see that their parents are here to read to the class and they’re proud of them.”
Literature Week also involves students venturing to the neighboring Northwest Library, but Walker said the field trip would have to be skipped this year because the library is closed for renovations.
