Burbank police get grant for more DUI checkpoints

The Burbank Police Department has received a $31,500 grant to fund sobriety checkpoints citywide through next September.

The funds will be used to conduct three sobriety checkpoints in Burbank streets in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related car crashes and pedestrian injuries, and improve traffic safety.

In 2011, police made 403 drunk driving arrests and responded to 89 alcohol-related traffic collisions, said Burbank Police Lt. Jay Hawver. This year, through the end of October, police have arrested 332 motorists on suspicion of drunk driving and responded to 81 alcohol-related crashes.

The first checkpoint will be held between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. starting Dec. 15. Traffic and weather permitting, police will screen all drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of intoxication.

Police declined to reveal at what intersection the checkpoint will be held.

“By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Burbank Police Department aims to deter motorists from drinking and driving,” said Burbank Police Officer Joshua Kendrick in a statement.

Less than two weeks ago, a 33-year-old man was struck and killed in an early morning collision in which police allege the driver of the other vehicle — 29-year-old Ivan Valle — was intoxicated.

Police urged residents to call 911 if they see a suspected drunk driver.

The California Office of Traffic Safety will reimburse the city for the overtime costs of officers running the checkpoints.
