Providence baseball rolls to first victory

BASEBALL

Providence 23, Sherman Indian 11: The Pioneers notched their first win of the season by defeating the Braves on Monday in a nonleague game at Foy Park.

Sean Holt was four for six with a home run, six runs batted in and three runs scored for Providence (1-1). Thomas Keller was two for four with a home run, two RBI and four runs scored.

Keller also pitched four solid innings to notch a victory in his high school pitching debut.

An 11-run sixth inning blew the game open and the Pioneers, who had 19 hits on the night.

Wildwood 12, Providence 11: Four errors in the final three innings plagued the Pioneers in their nonleague loss Friday at Foy Park.

Pitcher Sean Holt had a fine prep debut, striking out 11 in five innings. Holt was also two for five with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Senior Aaron Ziegler was three for four and Mason Inumberable was three for four with 2 RBI.

Burbank 11, Palmdale 3: The Bulldogs broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning to notch the win Saturday in a Easton Tournament game.

Ricky Perez had three hits and Harrison Hernandez drove in two runs for Burbank (2-2).

SOFTBALL

Burbank in Hart Tournament: The Bulldogs opened the event with two wins Saturday.

Along with a 3-2 victory against Quartz Hill in eight innings, the Bulldogs also defeated Agoura, 2-0.

Against Quartz Hill, Burbank (2-0) pitcher Cailtyn Brooks had 15 strikeouts and threw a three hitter.

Katie Hooper had a two-run home and Bridgette Pisa had a double and scored a run. Kaitlin Brooks was two for four and one RBI and had the winning hit in the eighth inning of the international tie-breaker.

Against Agoura, Caitlyn Brooks had 10 strikeouts in notching the win in the circle.

Jazmin Orozco and Hooper had hits for Burbank, which will face Chatsworth in the championship semifinals Saturday.

Burroughs in Simi Valley Tournament: The Indians split two game in the tournament Saturday at the Santa Susana Softball Complex in Simi Valley.

Burroughs defeated Westlake, 7-1, and fell to Righetti, 7-4.

Against Westlake, Burroughs (1-1) collected nine hits. Sidney Ortega went three for three with two runs scored and a stolen base, Michelle Santiago was two for two with a walk and three runs batted in.

Pitcher Brice Edrington threw a complete, giving up one earned run while striking out two.

Against Righetti, Burroughs had a 4-3 lead entering the fifth inning before the Warriors scored four runs.

Pitcher Cheyenne Steward got the loss in relief of Edrington.

Aimee Rodriguez collected two hits and had two RBI and Edrington also had a walk, hit and two stolen bases. Burroughs helped out Righetti by walking six batters and committing three errors, which led to five unearned runs.

Burroughs will play in the consolation bracket semifinals Saturday against La Reina.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Burroughs in Redondo Preseason Tournament: The Indians placed fifth out of 32 teams in the event Saturday at Redondo Union High.

In pool play, Burroughs (6-1) beat Long Beach Millikan, 25-20-25-18, Culver City, 25-15, 25-21, and Warren, 25-19, 26-24.

In the championship round, the Indians defeated Junipero Serra, 25-17, 21-25, 15-13, before losing to Palos Verdes, 21-25, 15-25. But Burroughs bounced back to defeat South Torrance, 13-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Daniel Jacobs was named to the all-tournament team.
