After seven years, Burbank councilman secures line to mayor position
For the first time after seven years on the Burbank City Council, David Gordon was selected as the city’s vice mayor.
The largely ceremonial post, which requires the approval of the council, is a prerequisite to becoming the city’s mayor, an annual rotating position that has so far eluded Gordon.
“I’m very honored to have this position,” Gordon said of the vice-mayorship on Wednesday.
After a year as vice mayor, Emily Gabel-Luddy was unanimously selected as mayor.
Gordon, a controversial figure who often stands alone on issues, had been overlooked for mayor multiple times during his seven years on the council.
But his selection prompted cheers and applause from the crowd that packed the council chambers Wednesday in City Hall. During the April general election, Gordon was the top vote-getter.
“I think writing was on the wall that I’ve earned the position,” Gordon said. “I think [the council members] recognize that, and they realize that it’s time for a change.”
During the reorganization meeting, during which Gordon, Bob Frutos and Jess Talamantes were sworn in, a handful of Burbank residents took the stand to voice support for Gordon.
“It does not matter whether you like him or not, the residents have spoken to you loud and clear,” said Rancho resident Cecilia Wagers. “We like him.”
Councilman Gary Bric nominated Gordon for the position, which generated unanimous support from the council.
Winners of the Burbank Unified school board, city treasurer and city clerk races were also sworn in. The school board will meet Thursday to decide on the next president.
