Schiff, other leaders, to host hearing on helicopter noise

A hearing will be held on June 10 to discuss a recent report from the Federal Aviation Administration looking at helicopter noise in Los Angeles County, particularly the San Fernando Valley.

The report leaves open a range of options for how to tackle the noise issues, although most of them center on more studies and discussions with industry stakeholders.

Hosted by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), the hearing will be held at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Theatre at the Autry National Center, 4700 Western Heritage Way in Griffith Park.

Joining Schiff will be fellow Congressman Tony Cardenas and county Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, as well as representatives from the FAA, homeowners associations and the helicopter industry.

Schiff and other Congressional representatives requested the FAA report in order to develop solutions to longstanding complaints from homeowners about the disruptions caused by helicopter traffic, including news choppers, paparazzi, tour operators and public safety agencies.

At the hearing, FAA officials will present the agency’s findings related to helicopter noise and then elected officials and homeowner and helicopter representatives will be able to ask questions.

Schiff and others in Congress have introduced the Los Angeles Residential Helicopter Noise Relief Act, which would require the FAA to set regulations relating to flight paths and altitudes for helicopter flights in L.A. County.
