Burbank Animal Shelter to provide free collars, ID tags
Dogs and cats lucky enough to get adopted out of the Burbank Animal Shelter will not only get a new home, but their own collars and identification tags.
The new duds will come after the shelter uses a $6,500 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to purchase an engraving machine, ID tags and collars, officials announced Wednesday.
“The simple act of providing a collar and ID tag to each animal that leaves the shelter can be the best way of preventing them from getting lost and coming back through those doors as a stray,” Jill Buckley, senior director of community initiatives at the ASPCA, said in a statement.
Of the more than 2,500 dogs and cats taken in at the Burbank facility last year, just 30% of dogs and 3% of cats were reunited with their owners, according to the shelter.
While each dog and cat adopted from the shelter is implanted with a microchip, Community Outreach Director Karen Wilcox said in a statement that engraved ID tags can reduce the time it takes to reunite lost pets with their owners.
“Lost pets will hopefully be returned to their owners without ever having to be brought to a shelter,” she said.
The free tag and collar offer will last until the grant funds have been expended, officials added.
