Burbank police discover stash of ID theft, forgery equipment

A 38-year-old man allegedly attempting to cash a forged check in Burbank led police to a hotel room full of credit card skimmers, printers, blank checks, false identities and personal information of multiple victims.

At 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police responded to City National Bank – located at 3500 West Olive Ave. – after Alex Acosta allegedly attempted to cash a business check that had already been cashed for a different amount, said Burbank Police Officer Joshua Kendrick.

Outside the bank, police contacted a 48-year-old Granada Hills man – identified as Sel Yapo – who was waiting for Acosta.

The investigation led officers to the Ramada Inn in Burbank, where Acosta had a room with his 37-year-old girlfriend, Ruthy Reagan, Kendrick said.

Inside the hotel room, police reported finding Reagan – who had an outstanding warrant for her arrest – the forgery materials, suspected methamphetamine and fake identities for the trio, Kendrick said.

The three suspects were arrested on suspicion of identity theft and forgery, Kendrick said.
