Bob Hope Airport briefly evacuated after possible TSA screening breach
More than 200 people were briefly evacuated from a section of Bob Hope Airport Thursday after a “mix up” at a security checkpoint may have allowed a passenger through without being properly screened, an official said.
Passengers were evacuated from the concourse, or the airline gate area of Terminal A — which includes Southwest and U.S. Airways — at about 11:15 a.m. and were brought back around to the security line, where they were re-screened, said airport spokesman Victor Gill.
“This is standard [Transportation Security Administration] procedure, no cause for alarm,” Gill said. “When TSA realizes somebody went through without being screened, it confers with airport and then makes call to evacuate if they agree.”
It was not immediately clear if a passenger did indeed slip through the security checkpoint.
“These situations by and large happen simply when they lose track of somebody in the screening process, not that there’s something overtly threatening going on,” Gill added.
