Burbank housing project ready for tenants

A new 20-unit, eco-friendly affordable housing project was unveiled on Thursday, wrapping up two years of construction and replacing a cluster of severely blighted buildings in “horrific” condition, officials said.

The $9.7-million Sycamore at Catalina development, located at 2223 Catalina Ave., features solar panels, central air conditioning and a washer and dryer in each unit. It is the last affordable housing project funded by the now-defunct redevelopment agency.

Tenants are being plucked from the Burbank Housing Corp.’s waiting list, which includes more than 300 families with incomes ranging from “extremely low” to “moderate.” Depending on income level and room size, rents in the development range from $389 to $1,500 a month.

Most of the tenants are slated to move in over the next week, though four families already live there.

Officials touted the building’s energy-efficient amenities, including electric-car charging stations available for tenants in the parking lot.

“It’s one of our greenest buildings,” said Raha Arnold, asset manager of the housing corporation. The agency runs another 270 units in different buildings across the city.
