Update: Delays continue to grow after LAX shooting

The effect of the shooting at Los Angeles International Airport continued to grow Friday, with more delays caused by severe weather at East Coast airports.

The fatal shooting that took place at Terminal 3 at LAX has prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to call a “ground stop”: flights destined for Los Angeles were halted and others scheduled to depart from LAX have been canceled or delayed, the Los Angeles Times reported.

As of early afternoon, 133 flights were canceled, including 68 departures and 65 arrivals, according to the travel monitoring site FlightStats. And 293 flights were delayed, including 139 arrivals and 154 departures.

Most of the canceled flights into LAX were from airports in the Bay Area and Las Vegas, according to FlightStats.

Airline officials said they will try to rebook passengers on delayed flights to the next available flight and will refund tickets on a case-by-case basis. Passengers can also try to rebook their flights out of nearby airports.

Departures from LAX Terminals 1, 2, and 3 were expected to resume Friday afternoon, although airlines are expecting some of those flights to go out with few passengers on board or empty.

LAX is the sixth-busiest airport in the world and the third-busiest in the United States. It operates 680 daily flights.

Meanwhile, heavy weather is causing delays and cancellations at several major airports on the East Coast, including Logan International Airport in Boston, LaGuardia Airport in New York and Philadelphia International Airport.
